Pictou County Rivers Association

Pictou County Rivers Association

The Pictou County Rivers Association was formed in 1990 and has been actively involved in a wide variety of projects related to the conservation and restoration of the rivers in Pictou County since that time.  Over the past 25 years, we have completed habitat restorations projects on the East River, West River, Sweets Brook, Bear Brook, Watervale Brook, Pine Tree Brook, Six-Mile Brook, Eight-Mile Brook, Four-Mile Brook, West Branch River John, Marshy Hope Brook, Poor Farm Brook, Archibalds Brook, Glencoe Brook and MacKay Brook.  Restoration work usually includes digger logs, wing deflectors, rip rap and cover devices.

The Association, in partnership with local industries and government departments, have placed cold water aquariums in fourteen Pictou County elementary schools as part of the Fish Friends program.  Since its inception, the school children have raised about 25,000 salmon fingerlings which have been stocked into local streams.

The association conducts the River Watch program in our area, organizes winter fly tying classes, hosts 2 annual fishing derbies, and helps the provincial Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture with various stocking programs involving Pictou County Rivers.

Our group has participated with DFO in the Community Aquatic Monitoring Program "CAMP" (tidal or brackish water) for a number of years examining environmental quality in the Pictou Harbour area, and this sparked up an interest to monitor our fresh water streams to see how they were doing.
